Our Advisors

Ulrike Berzau

MM, MHS, PT, FACHE, Adjunct Professor
Fairleigh Dickinson University

Ulrike Berzau, MM, MHS, PT, FACHE, serves as a valued advisor to the Ursamin team. In her current role as an Adjunct Professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Public Health Administration graduate programs, she utilizes her extensive experience as healthcare executive to shape the next generation of professionals.

With a global career spanning the United States, Canada, Germany, Haiti, and the Middle East, Berzau has managed and consulted on international rehabilitation projects and led rehabilitation hospitals and services. Her time in Boston, working alongside Harvard physicians and researchers and serving as an Associate Professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, has further enhanced her industry insights.
Through her expansive experience across various care settings, Berzau identified a critical gap – the lack of seamless communication between patients and providers. Her upbringing in Germany, with its centralized health records and efficient healthcare system, has convinced her that improvement is possible. With her ambition to challenge the status quo in the United States, Berzau’s perspective and insights are instrumental to the Ursamin team’s mission.

Berzau is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), and she
holds a Master of Health Science, a Master of Management, and a Master of Physical
Therapy. Beyond her impressive academic credentials, Berzau has also established herself as a bestselling author, showcasing her comprehensive understanding of healthcare in a digestible format for a wider audience.

Her dedication to healthcare extends beyond her clinical practice. As the Medical Director of Inpatient Pediatrics at South Shore Health, she has led numerous multidisciplinary committees delivering innovative, collaborative solutions addressing departmental challenges.

Dr. Cardello has championed patient safety and care. Under her leadership, guidelines in tune with national best practices have enhanced the patient journey and have been implemented across the Boston Children’s network of hospitals. University of Massachusetts Medical School, Dr. Cardello brings a wealth of academic rigor to her work. Julie A. Shapiro

MD, ER Medicine Physician
South Shore Health-South Weymouth

Dr. Julie A. Shapiro is an advisor on the Ursamin team. Dr. Shapiro, based in Weymouth,
Massachusetts, is a seasoned emergency medicine physician with more than two decades
of experience in the field. Currently affiliated with South Shore Health-South Weymouth, she
completed her medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of
Medicine.

Devoted to her role in the Emergency Department (ED) throughout her career, Dr. Shapiro
is a strong advocate for efficient and effective patient care. Her responsibilities at South
Shore ED extend beyond physician – she assists in physician onboarding and manages MD
scheduling, a testament to her organizational skills and dedication to the hospital.
Dr. Shapiro was elected to South Shore’s medical executive committee and provider
council. She is part of physician leadership and plays a key role in communication between
the clinical staff and hospital administration. Dr. Shapiro has also been actively involved in
various initiatives aimed at reducing both literal and figurative waste in the initiation of care,
demonstrating her commitment to healthcare efficiency.

Having experienced the transition from handwritten paper charts to the most modern
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, Dr. Shapiro has keenly felt the frustrations of
retrieving critical patient information during urgent situations in the ER. This has sparked her
special interest in making patient data easily accessible and user-friendly, especially in high-
stakes environments. Dr. Shapiro’s interests align well with Ursamin’s mission, making her
an invaluable asset in the pursuit of shared health decision making.
